About Me

Hi, I’m Zach. I am a cardiac sonographer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for UnityPoint Health. I’ve been doing ultrasound for 13 years, which doesn’t seem like it when I say it out loud. I haven’t always worked in Cedar Rapids. Between trying to find my niche and working as a traveling sonographer, I’ve found myself in places such as Fargo, ND, Sioux City, IA, Manchester, NH, San Jose, CA, Milwaukee, WI, and Duluth, MN. Ultimately for the past five years, I have called Cedar Rapids my home, where my wife and I have begun to raise our two children.

Because of my traveling work history, I have a unique and diverse skillset when it comes to echocardiography. Having to pack up and move every three months was not very enjoyable. However, each location I got a chance to work at was an opportunity to learn a new skill set and learn a new technique. Sometimes these experiences were good and it was positive reinforcement of my abilities. And sometimes the experiences were not so good and it was a negative reinforcement. Either way, I relished those trials and it made me a better sonographer.

Fast forward, I am the lead preceptor at our cardiology clinic for ultrasound students rotating through their clinicals. It's my favorite part about of the job. I get to help students develop those skills in hope that they might not have to go through some of the same difficulties I went through to learn my craft.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and our two kids, especially in the summer when we spend a lot of our days at the pool. On other days we play a lot of pretend hockey, football, basketball, or just be goofy - we constantly have laughs in our house. My wife and I like to travel (when we have time for it). During my traveling sonography career, we took vacations to Thailand (pictured above), Ireland, and many mini trips at my traveling work locations.
